The European Commission has imposed stricter guidelines on OpenAI’s ChatGPT, social media giant Reddit, and gaming platform Roblox, classifying them as 'very large online platforms' under the EU Digital Services Act. This new designation means these services must now remove illegal content and protect minors' privacy and security, or risk hefty fines.
Henna Virkkunen of the EU’s digital department stated, “These platforms now face heightened scrutiny, reflecting their significant impact on our citizens and society.”
The decision follows their recent milestone of surpassing 45 million monthly users in the EU, triggering the need for enhanced regulation. The companies have until December to comply with the new obligations, or brace for penalties.
With the EU’s move expanding digital safety regulations to include generative AI, it marks a new frontier in tech oversight. The question remains: can AI services keep up in this evolving regulatory landscape?
