Toilets of the Future: Stool Scanners and AI Diagnostics

Are we really going to analyze our poop for health insights? Maybe, but think twice before flushing your data down the toilet.

It's no secret that our health is closely tied to our gut. Now, smart toilets are taking this a step further by analyzing our stools using AI. Companies like Kohler Health and Throne are capitalizing on this trend, offering devices that clip onto your toilet and use cameras to analyze your deposits. But are these gadgets really worth the $449 to $399 price tag?

Gastroenterologists are mixed on the usefulness of these devices. While they can track hydration and stool consistency, some argue that they may not offer much new insight for healthy people with regular bowel movements. The real value, they say, lies in long-term tracking to identify patterns, such as dehydration or how certain foods affect your stomach.

Moreover, these devices could potentially detect blood in the stool, which can be a sign of serious health conditions. However, critics point out that the technology is still too expensive for widespread use as a screening tool for cancer or other health risks. The recurring subscription fees may also be a deterrent for some.

Despite the skepticism, entrepreneurs like Scott Hickle of Throne see potential in using AI to detect blood in stool samples more accurately than the naked eye. His next generation device, which will use multispectral imaging, could launch within two years. However, it remains to be seen whether this approach will be as effective as testing in medical labs.

While the idea of analyzing your poop might seem a bit off-putting, it's clear that the future of health monitoring is increasingly personalized and tech-driven. As always, it's important to weigh the benefits against the costs and potential privacy implications.
