Nvidia Buys Hugging Face for Big Bucks

Is AI’s open-source future a safer bet than proprietary models?

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, an online developer tools company, for nearly $13 billion. The deal signals Nvidia’s commitment to open-source AI, offering developers a suite of free, customizable AI models. This move underlines the belief that open-source models can advance technology faster than proprietary ones. The acquisition comes as Nvidia rallies support for open-source AI, launching initiatives like SAFE, to encourage tech companies to share data and insights. Hugging Face, founded by three French entrepreneurs in New York, has become a platform for developers to share and build on complex tech tools. The company's recent hacking incident sparked a broader conversation about the safety and manageability of AI agents. Nvidia’s embrace of open-source software and models might seem like a shift, but it aligns with the company's strategy to keep developers building on its platforms. The deal, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, will let startups, businesses, universities and public institutions build on advanced capabilities without training every model from scratch.
