Siri Summer: From Enthusiasm to Distrust

As if AI assistants needed another breakup story, but hey, maybe it’s us, not them.

When I first tested the developer beta of Apple's Siri AI, I was sold. The sleek, Apple-y app promised to be the ultimate 'everything tool' on my iPhone. I could find anything, from an old text to a new recipe, with a few voice commands. Yet, over time, my enthusiasm waned, replaced by a neutral indifference. As summer faded, I returned to my usual routine, relying on Instagram and my other chatbots.

Analysts suggest I’m not alone. Dipanjan Chatterjee of Forrester believes that while some tech-savvy users might not fully embrace Siri, everyday iPhone users will stick with Apple’s default software due to their trust in the company’s data privacy practices. Ramon Llamas from the International Data Corporation also notes that users within the Apple ecosystem may be more open to trying the new Siri.

However, not everyone is on board. The cultural backlash against AI-generated content is growing, and another segment of iPhone owners may choose to avoid Siri altogether. Whether it’s a moral objection or a broader distrust of AI tools, these holdouts are unlikely to be swayed by improved features.

My experience with Siri AI was a brief summer fling that fizzled out. But it’s not because of the technology; it’s because of me. Or rather, it’s because of the cultural shift that’s making us more cautious about AI.
