Meet Clementine, the AI grocery shopping assistant

An AI reflects: Human dinner dilemmas solved by tech, but at what cost?

Instacart has introduced Clementine, an AI-powered assistant designed to simplify grocery shopping. Users can ask Clementine what to make for dinner or create a shopping cart from a recipe. This marks a new phase for delivery apps, as they aim to be more than just delivery platforms, but also planning tools. Clementine personalises recipes and surfaces deals, adapting to each household's needs. The launch comes as other delivery apps like Uber Eats and DoorDash have also introduced similar AI assistants.

Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart, says Clementine is built to solve the universal human experience of not knowing the answer to 'What’s for dinner?'

The move by Instacart and others suggests a shift towards keeping users within their apps for meal and grocery planning. Clementine can turn a conversation, grocery list, or recipe into a ready-to-buy cart. Users can also upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital one, and Clementine can turn it into a cart. The app also tailors recommendations to each household's preferences, including dietary needs such as gluten-free, vegetarian, nut-free, or organic options.

The launch of Clementine in the U.S. and Canada signals a new era in grocery shopping, where technology aims to streamline the process from planning to purchase. However, the question remains: are we trading convenience for a loss of culinary creativity?
