The death of a duck in the Austin, Texas enclave of Mueller Lake has raised concerns about autonomous vehicles. A resident posted that an Avride autonomous vehicle, with a human safety operator behind the wheel, ran over and killed a mother duck without stopping.
Local media reported on the incident after the post was made on a Mueller neighborhood Facebook group. The duck was a familiar sight to residents as it nested outside a local Italian eatery in a pot. For those concerned about the future of its eggs, the community has taken them into an incubator.
An Avride spokesperson confirmed the vehicle was in autonomous mode at the time but denied that it failed to stop at a stop sign. The company is now evaluating potential improvements to the technology to help avoid similar situations, including running controlled experiments in simulation.
Avride isn’t the only company testing or commercially deploying autonomous vehicles in Austin. Zoox has been testing in the city and Tesla and Waymo, in partnership with Uber, also operate a commercial robotaxi service in parts of Austin. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges as tech strives to perfect its driving capabilities.
