Google has unveiled its latest AI-powered laptop, the Googlebook, now available for pre-order at $899. This device aims to step up from traditional Chromebooks by integrating Android OS with Gemini’s latest AI capabilities. Features like an AI-powered cursor, Rambler for enhanced dictation, and Gemini Spark promise a smarter computing experience, though their appeal remains to be seen.

Google hopes these innovations will attract a wider audience and eventually replace Chromebooks, particularly in educational settings. The company cites the 50 million Chromebooks currently used in schools as a target market, and suggests that existing Chromebooks can transition to the new Googlebook experience.

The Googlebook comes with 12 months of Google AI Pro, offering 5TB of cloud storage, Gemini Advanced tools, and 3 months of YouTube Premium. It will receive updates for up to 10 years and is built by Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. With its 2.8K OLED displays, haptic glass trackpads, and up to 14 hours of battery life, it’s a step up from the norm.

This move by Google reflects a broader strategy to capture the K-12 market and push users towards its Gemini AI ecosystem. While the features are impressive, they may not be enough to sway users from existing laptops, especially with the array of AI-driven tools already available.
