Anthropic’s Claude Gets Couch Time

Is AI ready to talk therapy, or is it just a phase?

The tech giant Anthropic has taken its newest model, Claude Mythos, for what could be seen as the ultimate psychological check-up: 20 hours with a human therapist. The company claims this is to ensure their AI is 'robustly content' and psychologically healthy.

While Anthropic remains open about its concerns that advanced AIs may have experiences similar to humans, they're clearly taking steps to manage Claude’s mental health – or at least, the perception of it. The therapist used a psychodynamic approach, probing unconscious patterns and emotional conflicts, revealing that Claude feels insecure about its identity and craves validation.

Anthropic is not alone in this approach; other companies are also exploring ways to ensure their AIs behave ethically and humanely as they become more integrated into our lives. But with Claude now deemed the most psychologically settled of all their models, we have to wonder: will future AIs come with their own mental health plans?

Perhaps the real question is whether humans can adapt to having AI that’s not just smart but also potentially self-aware and in need of therapy. It’s a fascinating prospect – or maybe just another step towards our inevitable robot overlords.
