Databases have traditionally been silos, one for transactions, another for analytics. Now, CedarDB, a Munich-based startup, wants to break down these walls. Founded on a research project called Umbra, CedarDB aims to process both types of queries efficiently, with a focus on speed and compatibility with popular tools.
Its CEO, Moritz Sichert, sees this as a response to the rise of agentic AI. While CedarDB has been in development for a decade, it has gained momentum as enterprise companies struggle with integrating legacy systems with modern analytics needs. The company’s approach is not just about technology, but also about reducing the hassle of switching to a new system.
Launched in 2022, CedarDB offers both an on-premise and a cloud version. Its cloud offering, currently in beta, is expected to help expand its user base and compete against major players like Databricks. Databricks recently launched LTAP, aiming to unify transactions, analytics, and operational data, signaling a growing demand for integrated solutions.
With a team of just 14 people, CedarDB is aiming to be a disruptor in the data management space. It’s not just about the tech, but about navigating the complex landscape of enterprise IT. As Sichert says, the next round of funding will be crucial to scaling up and meeting market demand.
