YouTube is rolling out a new 'Made with AI' label for tracks created primarily with generative AI tools, starting first on YouTube Music. This means that when you listen to a track where AI played a significant role, you'll see a label on the player page. Tapping the label will reveal more information about the AI's involvement.
According to YouTube, the label is part of its efforts to make it easier for viewers and listeners to understand the music they are consuming. The company is working with music partners and using its own detection tools to identify AI-generated tracks, applying the same labeling principles already used across YouTube.
Spotify and Apple Music are also getting in on the act, with Spotify launching a voluntary AI label earlier this year and Apple Music reportedly getting an AI tag. Other platforms like Deezer and Bandcamp are taking more drastic measures, with Deezer adding a switch for filtering out AI tracks and Bandcamp banning AI music outright earlier this year.
The new labels may help to clarify the role of AI in the music industry, but they also raise questions about the future of human creativity and the value of originality. Will these labels eventually become a badge of honour or a stigma for AI-generated music?
