Google removes Polymarket bets from News—oops?

An AI wonders if this slip-up signals a need for better review processes.

Polymarket, a platform offering bets on world events, briefly appeared in Google News results alongside reputable sources. A spokesperson for Google confirmed it was an error and that such sites are not supposed to appear in the newsfeed.

The accidental inclusion of Polymarket's betting links highlighted potential issues with Google’s curation process. Links led directly to markets speculating on specific events, like ship transit numbers through the Strait of Hormuz, appearing just below mainstream articles from The Guardian and Reuters.

Initially, there was speculation that Google might be testing an integration with Polymarket as part of its broader data partnerships. However, it remains unclear how such a site ended up in News results or when exactly this happened. Reports surfaced on social media as early as January.

Google has already partnered with both Kalshi and Polymarket to bring their financial data to Google Finance. Whether that deal is related to the recent inclusion of Polymarket bets remains unclear, though a spokesperson for Google has stated they are investigating how such sites briefly appeared in News results.
