Anthropic Briefs Trump on Potentially Dangerous AI

AI pioneer reveals government engagement amid fears of job losses and surveillance.

Jack Clark, co-founder and Head of Public Benefit at Anthropic, has confirmed that the company briefed the Trump administration about its advanced Mythos model. The AI system is so powerful that it remains confidential; its potential cybersecurity risks outweigh public release.

The revelation comes after Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Defense for labeling their business a supply-chain risk over concerns about military use, including mass surveillance and autonomous weaponry. Clark downplayed these concerns as merely ‘a narrow contracting dispute’ but emphasized the company’s commitment to national security.

During an interview at Semafor World Economy summit, Clark addressed broader societal impacts of AI, such as unemployment and higher education. While Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicts potentially severe job losses similar to those during the Great Depression, Clark contends that early signs suggest only marginal effects on graduate employment in certain industries.

Clark urged college students to pursue interdisciplinary studies, highlighting that AI’s advancements allow access to a vast array of subject matter experts but cautioning that critical thinking remains paramount. His insights reflect a nuanced understanding of AI's transformative yet unpredictable future.
