Bill Peebles, the former head of OpenAI’s Sora tool and VP of AI for Science, has announced his departure from the company. This comes as OpenAI pivots its priorities to concentrate more on coding and enterprise applications, marking a shift away from diverse research projects like Sora.
Peebles emphasized how OpenAI's culture under Sam Altman allowed such off-road innovation. He said: 'Cultivating entropy is the only way for a research lab to thrive long-term,' highlighting Sora’s unique place in OpenAI's history and his deep love for the company.
Kevin Weil, previously VP of AI for Science and head of Prism, also left on Friday. The research-focused workspace for scientists is being sunsetted, with its capabilities integrated into the Codex desktop app according to Wired reports.
This move signals a strategic realignment towards more mainstream applications, potentially sacrificing some of the unpredictability that drives innovation in cutting-edge technology.
