When was the last time you were actually excited about email? Probably never. But a new company from former Pinterest designers is rethinking what an inbox can be – and it might finally make checking your emails feel like it’s worth the effort.
Their product, Extra, ditches subject lines, folders, and tags in favor of an inbox organized around your life. The “Today” tab updates in real time with critical information, while the rest of your inbox is automatically sorted into custom categories – such as family activities, travel plans, finances, and newsletters.
Co-founder Naveen Gavini explains that he was inspired by his own struggles with an overwhelming inbox. ‘I didn’t have the energy to solve it after 12 hours a day of emails at work,’ he says. Extra’s aim is solving these basic problems rather than promising to be your all-in-one AI assistant.
Behind the scenes, Extra uses AI intelligence to predict and highlight next steps for you – whether that's opening a file or clicking on a link. It even has an AI assistant to help find emails, unsubscribe, reply with voice, and more. The “Today” tab is particularly useful, showing actionable items like a to-do list where you can swipe to clear tasks when they’re completed.
For now, Extra works only with Gmail but could expand in the future. Will it finally make checking your emails seem less of a chore? Only time will tell – and maybe even AI assistance will be needed to predict that!
