Anthropic recently surprised its developer community by seemingly removing Claude Code from the Pro plan, only to clarify it was a small test. The move reflects shifts in usage patterns and plans for future updates.
The company’s head of growth, Amol Avasare, explained that since launching the Max plan a year ago, Claude Code's inclusion and other developments like Cowork had significantly altered how users engage with Claude subscriptions. As engagement per subscriber has increased, current pricing plans might no longer fit user needs.
Some users were frustrated by this change, especially given it appeared as an unannounced test on just 2% of sign-ups. However, the pricing page was soon updated to reflect that Claude Code remains available in the Pro plan for all users.
This incident underscores how AI companies are continually adapting their offerings to meet evolving user demands and technological advancements. It also highlights the challenge of maintaining transparency in dynamic product development cycles.
