Meta has introduced new supervision tools that allow parents to view the topics their teens have discussed with Meta AI over the past week on Facebook, Messenger or Instagram. The ‘Insights’ tab within the supervision hub lists wide-ranging categories such as School, Entertainment, Lifestyle and Health and Wellbeing.
Parents can delve deeper into these broad themes; for example, Lifestyle breaks down into fashion, food and holidays. Meta first hinted at these insights in October last year but has now rolled them out globally in select countries, with an impending worldwide rollout.
The update follows a significant suspension of AI character access by Meta, which halted teens’ interactions just before a lawsuit concerning child safety was set to go to trial. This move signifies a shift towards parental oversight and transparency in tech use among young users.
Meta has also provided parents with suggested conversation starters to facilitate open dialogue about their children's AI experiences. The company has established an AI Wellbeing Expert Council, aiming to develop more appropriate products for teens.
