Google's Staking a Claim in AI’s Future

Is Anthropic the next big thing, or just another tech bubble?

Google is set to pour at least $10 billion into Anthropic, with the potential for a staggering $40 billion if performance targets are met. This comes hot on the heels of Amazon's $5 billion investment in the same company, valuing Anthropic at an eye-watering $350 billion.

The rapid growth of Anthropic’s Claude models and related tools like Claude Code is driving this investment frenzy. While these tools promise to streamline software development, the reality varies widely, depending on project specifics and usage methods.

Anthropic's success has been buoyed by a mix of factors: controversy around OpenAI, more sophisticated agentic workflows, and new products such as Claude Cowork, which offers similar benefits for general knowledge work tasks as Claude Code does in software development.
