Former DeepMind researcher David Silver has launched a new British AI lab called Ineffable Intelligence and raised $1.1 billion in funding.
The company aims to create an advanced 'superlearner' that can discover knowledge without relying on human data, using reinforcement learning – the same technique behind AlphaZero's board game triumphs.
David Silver, now a professor at University College London, was previously leading DeepMind’s reinforcement learning team. His new venture hopes to replicate this success but on an unprecedented scale.
Ineffable Intelligence’s ambitions are bold: they claim their superlearner could 'explain and build all Intelligence,' echoing the impact of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.
The round was led by Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Index Ventures, Google, Nvidia, among others. This high-profile fundraising suggests a growing momentum around London as an AI hub, with notable names like Jeff Bezos’ Project Prometheus reportedly considering office space nearby.
