As artificial intelligence (AI) starts to mimic the music industry, Spotify is stepping in with a new ‘Verified by Spotify’ badge designed to separate authentic artists from AI-generated tracks. To qualify, musicians must display active engagement both on and off the platform, including concert dates, merchandising, and social media presence.
Spotify’s criteria are clear: profiles primarily representing AI-generated music or AI-persona artists will not be eligible for verification. The company is focusing on artists with sustained listener activity, ensuring that most independent artists across various genres and regions will receive the badge at launch.
The new badges will appear in search results and artist profiles over the coming weeks, featuring a green checkmark alongside ‘Verified by Spotify’ text. This move comes as part of Spotify’s broader efforts to address the proliferation of low-quality AI-generated content, following similar actions from competitors like Deezer.
In an effort to further authenticate artist profiles, Spotify is also introducing a new section highlighting career milestones and touring activity. Even without the badge, this section will provide users with insights into the artists’ authentic activities.
