Apple's iPhone 17 soars, but will AI be its next big thing?

As tech giants race towards AI, Apple partners rather than competes.

Apple has announced record-breaking sales for the iPhone 17 with growth in China outpacing other regions. Overall sales of Apple products increased by 17% to $111bn (£81bn) in the first quarter of this year, with China sales up by 28%. Tim Cook, outgoing CEO, hailed the launch as the most popular in history.

The success of the iPhone is tempered by flat sales of other products like Macs and wearables. However, the new MacBook Neo saw 'off the charts' demand, setting a record for new buyers thanks to its lower price point. Apple Intelligence, which includes Siri, will be updated with AI as an integral part of their devices, respecting user privacy.

Competitors like Reddit also reported strong growth, with 200 million US users visiting the platform each week and ambitions to increase this to daily visits. Reddit's CEO Ladd Huffman stressed the importance of their data in training AI models for companies like OpenAI and Google, noting that as internet content becomes more optimised for AI, platforms like Reddit will become even more crucial.

Roblox faced a setback after implementing stricter age checks on its platform, resulting in lower user growth. Despite this, the company’s revenue grew significantly over the last three months, but expectations were not met by investors.
