Google Chrome may be hoarding more than just browsing history, with its latest AI features potentially gobbling up to 4GB of precious storage space. The weights.bin file, associated with Gemini Nano, is quietly making a home in your system folders when certain tools like scam detection and autofill are activated.
To check if this has happened, head into the Chrome data folders and look for the OptGuideOnDeviceModel directory. But beware: deleting it won’t solve everything; enabling the On-Device AI option will likely download the file again. Instead, turn off these features in Settings to free up space permanently.
While local AI models offer privacy benefits, users often feel left in the dark when it comes to storage needs. Google advises that the model size may vary with updates, but this isn’t a prominent warning for users. If only there was an option to stick with cloud-based models…
For now, we’re left wondering if our devices are smarter than us after all – continually reminding us of the price of convenience.
