Waymo has temporarily halted its operations in Atlanta after one of its self-driving cars got stuck in floodwaters. This incident follows a previous pause in San Antonio, Texas, as the company continues to grapple with how to prevent its robotaxis from navigating flooded roads.
The car was spotted driving through water before becoming stranded for over an hour. Waymo admits it still hasn’t fully resolved the issue and has implemented new software updates to restrict travel during high-risk conditions. However, these measures haven't stopped incidents like this from occurring, particularly when unexpected flooding occurs before official warnings.
Earlier this year, Waymo faced similar criticisms for allowing its vehicles to illegally pass school buses, leading to two ongoing investigations by regulatory bodies. The latest incident in Atlanta highlights the challenges of equipping autonomous cars with the ability to navigate unpredictable weather conditions effectively.
