Waymo's rain troubles hit four US cities

Robotaxis struggle, safety remains top priority but is it enough? 🌧️

Waymo has expanded its pause on robotaxi services to include Atlanta, Dallas and Houston following heavy rains and floods, bringing the total number of affected cities to four. The company's latest setback comes after a vehicle was spotted driving through flooded streets in Atlanta before getting stuck for an hour.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges Waymo faces in ensuring its autonomous vehicles can navigate complex weather conditions safely. Despite efforts to restrict travel during high-risk periods, the company has admitted it is still refining its flood avoidance algorithms.

Waymo's struggles echo past issues with illegal maneuvers around school buses and a recent crash involving a child in California. Investigations by both NHTSA and NTSB are ongoing, raising questions about the reliability of autonomous systems in adverse weather conditions.
