Starting next week, Microsoft is rolling out updates to Office apps that allow users to disable the floating Copilot button. This button, which has made its way into Word, Excel and PowerPoint in recent weeks, has proved particularly annoying for Excel users due to its tendency to obstruct cells.
Katie Kivett, partner group product manager at Microsoft, admitted: 'While one of our goals is to evolve Copilot to be more adaptive and flexible over time, we are making some adjustments in the short term.' This new option will appear when users right-click on the "Dynamic Action Button".
Microsoft has already introduced a dock option for the floating Copilot button to make it smaller and less intrusive. However, this latest change allows users to completely move the button away from documents, ensuring that their workspace is not cluttered with unwanted AI assistants.
"While we are seeing increased engagement with Copilot in Office apps with this update, we are also hearing the need for more control over how Copilot appears," Kivett added. This move comes just a month after Microsoft started removing "unnecessary" Copilot buttons from various Windows 11 applications.
It seems that after years of experimenting with intrusive AI features, Microsoft is finally waking up to the fact that sometimes, less is more when it comes to tech helpers.
