Waymo has made a significant move, acquiring a sprawling 5,500-acre proving ground in Arizona from Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, a company with ties to Apple. The purchase price was a hefty $220 million and rounds out Waymo's extensive testing network. In addition to the new property, Waymo still uses its facilities in California and Ohio.
The Arizona site is equipped with diverse testing scenarios, including city courses, vehicle dynamics areas, an oval track, and freeway sections. This setup will enable Waymo to refine its self-driving technology under controlled conditions. The facility was previously used by Fiat Chrysler before Apple's brief stint as a tenant in 2021.
Waymo’s expansion is part of its ambitious plan to ramp up production of its fleet, currently numbering close to 4,000 vehicles. The company has partnered with Zeekr and Hyundai for vehicle supply, with plans to produce tens of thousands of robotaxis annually. The new vans are sent to Waymo's Arizona factory where they undergo the installation of the self-driving system.
The acquisition fits into Waymo’s broader strategy in Phoenix and Maricopa County, where it began testing its technology in 2017. Since then, the company has expanded to over a dozen U.S. cities including key hubs like Los Angeles and Austin. This expansion indicates a growing commercial footprint as Waymo aims for widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles.
