Google has taken legal action against an alleged massive cybercrime operation called Outsider Enterprise, which uses artificial intelligence to impersonate Google and other brands in phishing scams. The tech giant claims the group has scammed 'hundreds of thousands' of victims with losses estimated at millions.
The scam network allegedly deployed 9,000 fake websites, one million fraudulent web domains, and sent 2.5 million texts to Android users over a two-week period. In just two weeks in May, Google detected more than 55,000 spam text complaints from Android users.
Outsider Enterprise is accused of using 'AI-powered tools' to create phishing websites that mimic legitimate services and companies, with the aim of stealing passwords and financial information. The group even offers a software package called Outsider for sale, which costs $88 per week or $200 a month.
Google's lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, and an order to stop the criminals from carrying out their activities. The company has been collaborating with AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and the FBI in its efforts to combat these scams.
