Uber has taken its driverless taxi services to new heights in Dubai by partnering with Chinese tech giant WeRide. Riders can now hail fully autonomous vehicles through Uber's app, marking a significant advancement in this Middle Eastern city.
The expansion is part of an ongoing pilot program that includes commercial and industrial zones, as well as suburban areas like Al Hamriya Port. This move comes after the government issued a permit for driverless vehicle trials, signaling a cautious but progressive approach to automation.
Uber's increased stake in WeRide – now holding 5.82% of the company – underscores its commitment to the future of autonomous mobility. Sarfraz Maredia, Uber’s global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that it represents a step towards a hybrid world where human drivers coexist with automated vehicles.
The investment is one in a series aimed at bringing driverless taxis to 15 more cities over the next five years. This initiative extends beyond the Middle East, potentially impacting urban landscapes across Europe and beyond.
