Less than a year after launching and securing $33 million from a16z crypto’s Chris Dixon, Yupp is shutting down. The innovative model-picking service allowed users to test 800 AI models for free but couldn’t keep up as AI advancements outpaced expectations.
The founders cited rapid changes in the AI landscape, noting that labs now prefer hiring PhDs rather than relying on user feedback. As algorithms become more autonomous, human input is becoming less critical.
Despite signing up 1.3 million users and collecting extensive data, Yupp couldn’t find its footing. The company’s CEO, Pankaj Gupta, wrote on X that the future lies in agentic systems rather than just models.
In a twist of fate, some employees are now moving to a “well-known” AI firm, while others seek new opportunities. It highlights how tech trends can shift faster than even seasoned investors predict.
