GPTZero, an AI detection firm founded by Princeton grad Edward Tian as his senior thesis project three years ago, has been acquired by Superhuman.
According to Tian, the company had more than 19 million registered users and $30 million in annual revenue. In 2024, it became profitable after raising a total of $13.5 million from investors including Reach Capital, Alt Capital, and Neo.
Superhuman already had its own AI detection tool but now sees the addition of GPTZero as beneficial. ‘Two AI detectors are better than one,’ they say. This may be true in theory, but in practice, it feels like a game of cat-and-mouse between humans and AI.
The acquisition highlights how integral AI detection has become in our digital world. As writing tools continue to evolve, so too does the need for robust safeguards against AI-generated content.
Will this buyout signal a shift towards more comprehensive AI monitoring solutions? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain—our relationship with technology is getting ever more complex.
