Tesla has unveiled its newest version of the Cybercab in Austin, Texas. This production model is stripped down to two seats and no steering wheel or pedals, relying on full autonomy. The move comes as Tesla prepares for a public robotaxi service, with safety monitors acting as backup.
The company’s aim is to compete with leaders like Waymo by using its own vehicles and software for cost control. However, the path to fully autonomous driving has been fraught with challenges, including minor crashes involving their Austin fleet.
While testing continues, Tesla faces scrutiny as it deploys gold-colored Cybercabs, potentially highlighting both successes and failures in its quest to revolutionize urban transport.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recent proposal could ease some regulatory hurdles for fully autonomous vehicles. This could signal a significant step towards a future where drivers are obsolete.
