X has unveiled a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to make it easier for AI assistants like Claude and Cursor to connect directly to its platform. This new service allows developers to integrate their AI applications more efficiently by leveraging users' existing X account permissions, cutting down on integration work.
Previously, building and hosting an MCP server was a time-consuming task that developers had to undertake. Now, with X handling the backend infrastructure, developers can focus on creating innovative features for their applications rather than managing servers.
The move positions X as an information network brimming with real-time data available for analysis by AI tools, highlighting its potential beyond just social networking. However, there is a lingering concern about automated posting or spam. While the hosted MCP doesn’t bypass X’s API rules, which still restrict misuse, users and developers will need to remain vigilant.
This development sees X joining other tech giants like GitHub and Slack in offering their own official MCP servers, indicating a growing trend towards fostering AI integration within platforms. The updated API v2 and increased pricing for certain actions are also part of X’s strategy to curb potential misuse by AI tools.
