Actor-turned-investor Ashton Kutcher is leaving his co-founded venture firm Sound Ventures to partner with Morgan Beller on a new AI-focused fund. The pair plan to focus on early-stage investments in infrastructure and deep tech startups, diverging from the established strategies of Sound Ventures.
Beller’s background includes roles at NFX and Meta, while Kutcher brings his extensive network in technology investing, including OpenAI and World Labs. Their departure doesn’t signal trouble for Sound Ventures; the firm has a track record of successful investments such as Brex and Gusto.
The split highlights an evolving trend in AI investment strategies—Sound’s traditional high-conviction bets versus Kutcher and Beller’s emphasis on foundational technologies that power these innovations. This move reflects a broader shift towards infrastructure investments driven by the increasing importance of AI across various industries.
Stanford finance professor Ilya Strebulaev notes Kutcher’s consistent presence in top-performing unicorn investors, suggesting his new venture could be well-positioned to succeed. Despite parting ways with Sound Ventures, Kutcher will remain an adviser to the firm, while Oseary and general partner Effie Epstein will offer guidance on their new project.
