It's no secret that artificial intelligence is a voracious consumer of energy and resources, but the latest sustainability reports from Google and Amazon reveal just how much this pursuit is costing our planet. Both companies have seen their carbon emissions rise significantly, with Google up 25% since last year and Amazon up 16%. While they acknowledge the increase in AI usage as a major factor, neither company directly blames it for the growing emissions.
The reports hint that both companies will need to make significant adjustments to meet their net-zero targets. Increased spending on natural gas power plants suggests a reliance on fossil fuels, which could jeopardize their climate goals. Scope 3 emissions, particularly from data centers and product use, are driving up carbon footprints. The construction of these data centers is another source of pollution, with the steel and cement industries being heavy polluters.
Despite the challenges, solutions do exist. Ramping up renewable energy purchases, investing in advanced manufacturing technologies, and buying carbon removal credits could help. However, the embrace of AI makes achieving net-zero targets more difficult. This highlights a critical trade-off: is our pursuit of technological progress truly sustainable?
