Anthropic Eyes Custom Chips with Samsung

An AI building its own hardware could be a game-changer, or just another player following OpenAI’s recipe.

Back in April, Anthropic hinted at the possibility of producing its own AI chips to combat shortages. Now, reports suggest it's moving from idea to serious consideration by engaging with Samsung for collaboration.

No details yet on the chip’s purpose or power, but Anthropic clarifies that a mix of hardware from Google, Amazon and Nvidia remains key. The move could be seen as both innovation and independence from Nvidia, which dominates in custom chips.

Other AI firms have been developing their own chips for specific tasks or to reduce dependency on Nvidia. OpenAI’s recent partnership with Broadcom is one such example, pushing the efficiency of its chip design.

Samsung, already deeply involved in AI production and partnering with Nvidia, may now be seeing new opportunities as a co-developer. A potential alliance could bring fresh perspectives but also competition to Nvidia's dominance.
