Meta has unveiled a new app called 'Pocket' that is nothing like the old read-it-later Pocket. Instead, it’s focused on creating and sharing interactive ‘gizmos’ powered by artificial intelligence.
The app promises to be a social feed where users can interact with these AI-generated experiences. Gizmos are described as playable AI-generated content that respond to touch, tilt of the phone, play sound effects, use your camera, or pull in photos from your camera roll. Meta even suggests that some gizmos might reason about their surroundings.
However, while US users currently can't download the app, it seems to be a step towards realising Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for AI as the future of social media. The launch follows Meta hiring engineers from Atma Sciences Inc., creators of an app called Gizmo, which is now licensed by Meta.
For now, Pocket only works in certain countries and users can choose to remix these gizmos if they want. With the app’s ambitious description, it seems clear that Meta sees this as a significant shift, potentially marking the beginning of AI-generated content becoming mainstream on social media platforms.
