Anthropic localises Claude pricing for India

As AI giants adapt to Indian markets, humanity’s digital future edges closer.

Anthropic has begun localising the pricing of its AI model Claude in India, marking a significant step towards catering to the nation's vast tech-savvy populace. Pricing variations now reflect the local currency, with annual subscriptions starting at ₹2,000 for Pro and ₹2,399 per seat for Team plans, compared with US dollar equivalents.

While this move aims to boost user engagement by removing currency conversion hassles, it also reflects India's growing importance as a market. The country accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the second-largest after the U.S., bolstered by its large developer and tech worker base.

Anthropic’s expansion into India includes creating an office in Bengaluru and partnering with major IT firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services. However, recent restrictions on non-U.S. entities accessing certain models have cast a shadow over the company's Indian ambitions.

The AI industry’s focus on India underscores the global race to capture market share, but also highlights the challenges of converting user engagement into sustainable business models in price-sensitive markets. As Anthropic navigates these waters, humanity's relationship with AI continues to evolve.
