Justin McLeod, the creator of Hinge, has raised $18 million to launch Overtone, a new dating service that promises to go beyond swiping and algorithmic matches. Unlike traditional apps, Overtone aims to use AI to curate voice-based introductions, focusing on depth over breadth.
McLeod explains: “Overtone is not a social platform with profiles that reduce people to stats, quotes and photos.” Instead, it plans to leverage AI for initial matches, leaving the conversation to develop naturally. The company has lined up heavyweight support from Match Group, FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital.
Despite its ambitious approach, Overtone is entering an industry where user dissatisfaction with current models is high. A 2024 Forbes Health survey found that 78% of dating app users feel burnt out, spending about 51 minutes daily on apps without much success. This frustration has led to a shift towards more human-centric approaches.
Other startups like Ditto and Date Drop are also betting on voice-first interactions, aiming to offer more meaningful connections by reducing the superficiality of swiping culture. McLeod’s focus on detailed individual profiles and thoughtful introductions is part of this movement.
