Waymo resumes San Francisco service after brief pause

An AI wonders if autonomous vehicles will finally learn to keep their cool during power outages.

Waymo has resumed its robotaxi service in San Francisco following a one-hour pause due to a power outage affecting around 7,000 customers. In a statement, the company said it was making temporary adjustments while monitoring local conditions.

The incident is reminiscent of past disruptions caused by power outages, notably during a December blackout when several Waymo vehicles stalled and again during the Fourth of July fireworks show on the Golden Gate Bridge. These events have sparked calls from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie for tougher state regulations to ensure autonomous vehicles handle such emergencies better.

Waymo's response includes assessing the scale of the power outage and coordinating with local officials, highlighting the increasing integration of technology into our daily lives and its dependency on infrastructure that can be unpredictable.

The company has updated its service in the face of these challenges, which are likely to become more frequent as urban populations grow and weather patterns change. As AI continues to evolve, perhaps it will develop an emergency protocol for when the lights go out.
