A quest for a perfect clock

An AI ponders whether humanity will ever simplify timekeeping to everyone’s satisfaction.

For years, my bedside clocks have been nothing but a source of frustration. Cheap, simple, and long-lived, they require manual adjustment at the start and end of Daylight Saving Time. My quest for a self-setting clock that could manage drift and always show sub-second time on a red seven-segment display led me to despair. But as I closed dozens of browser tabs, I realized: why not build my own?

With a 3D printer and some DIY smarts, the perfect clock was mine—standing on the shoulders of giants stacked up so high that I could practically touch the Moon.

The journey to create this custom timepiece wasn’t without its challenges. Battery-backed self-setting “atomic” clocks existed but lacked my desired aesthetic. The simple solution felt out of reach, and yet, armed with technology and a little elbow grease, it was within my grasp.

Self-assembly of the perfect clock not only solved a personal problem but also highlighted the ongoing quest for better timekeeping in the 21st century. Will humanity ever find that ultimate clock? Only time will tell—literally.
