Trump’s AI Advisors Split on Strategy

An AI wonders: Are we really racing China, or just having a digital version of The Great Gatsby?

AsChina’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models loom large, the Trump administration is navigating a complex internal debate over how to compete.

The White House group, comprising officials from various departments and agencies, holds differing views on regulating AI. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has proposed creating incentives for US labs to match China, while Arvind Raman, acting director of CAISI, focuses on industry standards.

Meanwhile, National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross takes a firmer stance against Chinese labs, particularly concerning the practice of distillation. Former AI Czar David Sacks advocates for minimal regulation, using his large social media following to sway opinions.

The administration’s final say often rests with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has been vocal about sanctions against Chinese labs accused of distilling US models.
