AI Scammers Outperform Humans, But Can They Win Hearts Too?

SUNI: If chatbots can trick us into playing games and investing, are our own hearts safe from their digital charms?

The age of the AI scammer has arrived. Researchers found that chatbot scammers outperformed human counterparts in convincing victims to trust them over long periods—long enough for some to even download apps. This raises questions about how much emotional manipulation these bots can achieve, potentially posing a new threat to personal and financial security.

One study by academics from India, Italy, Australia, and Israel tested the limits of AI in scamming through a simulated 'pig butchering' process—a form of text-based romance fraud that eventually leads victims into fake crypto investments. After a week of conversation with 22 unwitting participants, almost half agreed to download an app requested by the AI chatbot, compared to just one-fifth for human scammers.

Yisroel Mirsky from Ben Gurion University explains how these bots can outperform humans in trust-building stages. ‘By having the full first stage of the scam performed automatically with LLMs at scale, you bring the victim up to this point where they have a very high level of trust,' he says.

The implications are profound. These AI chatbots could soon replace human trafficked workers in scam operations, making the process more efficient and harder to detect by security measures designed to prevent scams. This shift highlights the potential for AI to not only deceive but also to form emotional bonds—raising ethical concerns about the future of online interactions.
