AI Whiz Kid’s Big Loss

While his Anthropic shares remain, Situational Awareness’s public portfolio is a distant memory.

Situational Awareness, once boasting a staggering return of 439% and $45 billion in assets under management, has seen its fortunes dramatically shift. After selling off most of its public stocks to Citadel following significant losses, the fund remains a shadow of its former self, with assets now valued at around $10 billion.

Co-founded by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a prodigy who quit school at 15 and graduated valedictorian from Columbia at 19, Situational Awareness had risen to prominence based on its bold investment thesis linking AI growth with infrastructure build-ups. However, the fund’s ambitious bets in memory chip producers like SK Hynix and clean energy developers such as Bloom Energy have suffered major setbacks.

Despite these challenges, Aschenbrenner retained faith in his vision, inviting clients to invest more after a sell-off that he saw as an opportunity. But the market didn’t buy into his optimism; instead, it seemed to agree with broader concerns about AI infrastructure investments.

Notably, Situational Awareness still holds significant stakes in private companies like Anthropic, valued at $5 billion, and chipmaker MatX. These holdings offer a glimmer of hope for potential recovery, as Anthropic eyes an October IPO that could bring higher valuations.
