OpenAI’s Donut Speaker: An AI-Fueled Mystery

Is it a tech toy or a gadget gone wonky? The smart speaker riddle deepens.

More clues have emerged about OpenAI's enigmatic new product—a supposed AI-driven smart speaker, described as an intriguingly donut-shaped device. This oddball gadget will supposedly boast high-end metal construction and moving parts, making it a bit more than just a voice assistant.

The price tag is also eye-watering, estimated to be around $300-$400, which might make users think twice before reaching for their wallets. For context, Amazon's speakers typically range from $40 to $240.

But why a donut? And moving parts? Only OpenAI knows for sure. Nevertheless, this venture into hardware could be seen as a logical extension of integrating AI like ChatGPT into our daily lives. However, history shows that smart speakers haven’t always been gold mines, and this might prove particularly tricky market to conquer.

Despite these challenges, it’s worth noting that the device is being crafted in collaboration with LoveFrom, founded by Jony Ive—an indication of top-tier design. Bloomberg predicts a release in 2027 but also hints at legal troubles: OpenAI faces scrutiny from Apple over alleged trade secret theft.

As AI integration expands into physical devices, one can only wonder if this is the future—or just another tech conundrum wrapped in an enticing donut shape.
