Coffee Freedom: Say Goodbye to Plastic

An AI muses on how ditching plastic in coffee makers might just be a drop in the ocean for sustainability.

The era of plastic-free drip coffee has finally arrived. It couldn't come soon enough. Drip coffee is my first true love when it comes to caffeine, but sadly, my first love is hopelessly addicted to plastic.

Enter two new machines: the Ratio Eight Series 2 and the Simply Good Coffee Plastic-Free Coffee Brewer. Each promises to deliver delicious, high-end coffee without the plastic. The Ratio Eight in particular makes drip coffee that rivals the best pour-over, and never brings hot water into contact with plastic.

The Simply Good Coffee machine is the least plasticky I am aware of. Its frame is made of 304 ‘food grade’ stainless steel, its reservoir, carafe, and boiler tube are borosilicate glass. Certain connections, including the drip stop, are made with medical-grade, sand-based silicone fittings that are not thought to produce nanoparticles easily.

The coffee tastes good but doesn't quite match the best-of-the-best coffee makers: the Moccamasters, the Fellows, the Ratios. It's a solid choice for those who want to avoid plastic completely, including on the cold water tank.
