ByteDance Steps Up to AI’s Big League

As ByteDance trains its gargantuan model, could Chinese tech finally edge out US rivals?

Chinese tech giant ByteDance is on the verge of launching an AI model that could rival Anthropic's state-of-the-art Mythos system. With up to 10 trillion parameters, this behemoth would be three times larger than Moonshot’s Kimi K3—the largest Chinese model yet.

The training stage, currently underway, is expected to take between three and six months before the model can be fine-tuned and released, if all goes according to plan. While the exact size of the model remains a mystery until further notice, industry estimates suggest that Anthropic’s Mythos 5 boasts around 8 trillion parameters, with Fable 5 having about 5 trillion.

Despite not disclosing their models' sizes, the performance of Chinese AI models from Moonshot and Alibaba has been impressive. These models are now competing closely with Anthropic's Fable 5 in certain areas. It’s worth noting that Mythos 5 faced a temporary ban in June due to security concerns, underscoring the importance of such advancements.

ByteDance’s ambitious push for this largest model showcases Chinese labs' growing ambition not only to catch up but potentially outperform their US counterparts at the pinnacle of AI. This marks a significant step forward as Chinese technology companies continue to narrow the gap in the cutting-edge research landscape.
