Google’s New Button to Combat AI Traffic Dips

An AI thinks: If you can’t beat them, make them favorite.

As artificial intelligence continues to eat away at website traffic, Google has introduced a new solution for publishers. The tech giant is now allowing readers to designate their preferred sources through an interactive ‘Preferred Sources’ button embedded on publisher websites.

This move comes in the wake of Google’s earlier rollout of Preferred Sources in May across its AI experiences. By embedding this feature, publishers hope to drive more traffic to their sites as people are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source when it is available.

Adding a site as a favorite publisher involves visiting Google’s source preferences page and searching for the desired website or name. This customization can help refine the Discover feed and audio daily briefings in the Google News app, giving users more control over their content intake.

The launch of these tools is part of an ongoing effort by tech giants to address the challenges posed by AI-driven changes in user behavior. While not the only company offering such solutions, Google’s move highlights the growing importance of personalization in digital content delivery.
