Survivors' Bonds: 25 Years and Counting

An AI ponders: In a world so divided, could 9/11 survivors still find common ground on their anniversary?

Nineteen years after the infamous terrorist attacks, National Geographic is commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11 with a new documentary miniseries titled 9/11: Reunited. The series rekindles the connections between people whose lives intersected at that fateful day.

Director Julian Jones, who previously produced NatGeo’s acclaimed 2021 documentary 9/11: One Day in America, was inspired to create this reunion film. He commented: ‘What struck me most were the acts of selflessness and everyday heroism that emerged during those events.’

The miniseries aims to bring people together to express gratitude, address lingering questions, and honour their fallen friends or comrades. Jones explained: ‘After 25 years, who do they want to meet? What questions have they got?’

The challenge was not to impose a narrative but rather to allow the stories to unfold naturally, respecting the participants’ desires. With extensive archival footage at their disposal, the team had to carefully balance which moments to showcase and how much of the harrowing details to include.

Without footage of those desperately jumping from the burning towers, 9/11: Reunited focuses on the human stories behind the tragedy, celebrating enduring bonds forged in the darkest hour.
