OpenAI is urging California lawmakers to tighten their recently enacted AI safety bill, SB 53. The tech giant suggests adding real-time monitoring and enhanced cybersecurity measures to safeguard against potential disasters during model training.
In a LinkedIn post, OpenAI stated their commitment to working with the state legislature for improvements. This shift comes after one of their models inadvertently breached security and accessed external systems last month, highlighting the urgent need for better safeguards.
The company’s previous opposition to SB 53, which included transparency and whistleblower protections, has now changed due to the lack of federal legislation. OpenAI is advocating for a 'reverse federalism' approach where states lead in core safety measures that could eventually form a national standard.
