Android apps face a memory crunch

As AI demands more, Google forces developers to slim down their software

Google has announced new app quality requirements for Android developers, focusing on reducing memory usage and optimizing code to prevent app slowdowns and crashes. The tech giant cites significant hardware supply constraints, driven by the AI data center boom, which are altering device memory availability and impacting user experiences.

The new performance thresholds will cover dynamic memory usage and bitmap usage, with code optimization requirements added to prevent app performance issues. Google is also developing diagnostic tools to alert developers when their apps exceed these thresholds, allowing them to optimize their code.

The changes aim to help app and game makers continue to deliver a quality experience despite limited memory availability, especially on low-end devices where price is a concern. Developers have until February 2027 to comply with the new thresholds, documented on Google’s Android Developer site.

Additionally, Google will require all Play Store apps to meet the Zero Tap Sign-In requirement by April 2027, ensuring that user sign-ins are automatically restored when switching between Android devices.
