OpenAI is set to show ads to users of its free and Go tiers of ChatGPT in India, following a change in its terms of service.
The company has over 100 million weekly active users in the country, with many using the free or lower-priced tiers. OpenAI has partnered with agencies WPP and Omnicom to launch an ad manager, allowing marketers to create campaigns with a minimum daily budget of ₹725.
“With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” said Dave Dugan, head of global ads solutions at OpenAI.
OpenAI has been working hard to grow its user base in India, offering a sub-$5 plan for ChatGPT Go and running promotions during sports tournaments. The company has even hired Uber’s India head to lead its expansion efforts in the country.
As OpenAI looks to cement its revenue sources ahead of a potential IPO, the move to show ads in India is part of its larger strategy to monetize its AI platform.
